The Marcy Town Board honored two firefighters Thursday evening, Aug. 28 - Maynard Fire Department's Daniel M. Crossway and Stittville Fire Department's William Owen Jr.
During a regular board meeting, Councilman James Goodman presented a plaque to Crossway, noting that the EMT and former chief was named a "Volunteer of Valor" by the New York State Senate in June. The honor recognized his nearly 26 years as a volunteer firefighter, four years as an emergency medical technician, "his courage and perseverance in overcoming challenges from injuries sustained in a training exercise," his service as chief of the Maynard Fire Department for eight years, and his current office of vice president of the fire district and president of the Oneida County Fire Chiefs Association.
The town board "acknowledges the bravery, service and concern of Daniel M. Crossway for the residents of the Town of Marcy," Goodman said.
Then Councilwoman Kathy Gregory-Salvo presented a plaque to Owen, noting that the former Stittville chief was installed as president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs in June - the fourth fire chief from Oneida County, and the county's first volunteer chief, to head the 103-year-old state organization.
A member of the Stittville Fire Department for more than 50 years, Owen was chief for 20 years, deputy fire coordinator of Oneida County for some 18 years, former secretary-treasurer of Oneida County Fire Chiefs Association, and former Oneida County HazMat coordinator.
Town Supervisor Brian Scala commented that the town was fortunate to not only have two devoted volunteers, but also to have two outstanding fire departments serving residents.
